Becoming A Stay At Home Mom

Becoming A Stay-At-Home Mom

I became a stay at home mom in July 2017. I can’t believe it’s been 9 months already. The whole transition wasn’t easy, let me just say that. I’ve always worked from when I was 15 1/2 so when my husband said I could become a stay at home mom I was very excited but nervous at the time. My biggest issue/concern was money how can we possibly do this. My husband is a game developer/computer programmer and at the time was a FT dad while I was a medical assistant. I decided to stay home to enjoy and raise my babies. My son was 2 and my daughter was 10 months so they are still very young, I was home to see my baby girl walk for the first time, and I can tell my son was so happy to see I was home every day.

2017 was a really rough year for me and my family. Everything didn’t go as planned like I hoped but life happens, things happen and I’m trying to make the best of this opportunity while my kids are still young and enjoy them. Having a one income family is already hard and at times can be very stressful. I thank God and I’m so grateful! He has been so good to us and he continues to bless us through the difficult times.

I love being a stay at home mom. It’s a lot of work and sometimes I feel like I’m doing more work than when I was working. Lol! It’s a 24/7 job but it’s so rewarding and seeing my babies face every morning brings me so much joy. These years are flying by and the way kids are growing up so fast I want to enjoy this time while they’re young. There are so many moms who wish they could stay home with their babies and I’m blessed to be giving the opportunity. Hats off to all the working mamas as well. I’ve been there and I know how hard it can be balancing work life and mom life.

Here are a few things that helped me with my transition and things I wished I would have done before leaving my job. Hope it helps other new “stay at home” mamas.

  • Have a plan set. As far as budgeting or having a little money saved before you leave a job. Make sure you and your spouse are on one accord.
  • Come up with a schedule. I love my planner! It helps me stay organized with planning out my day, activities for the kids and helps me balance out my life. I enjoy writing in it and adding fun stickers to make it look cute. Lol!

Do you enjoy using planners? Writing things out and keeping track of your day?

If so, check out the products I’ve mentioned below!

  • Stay Active. Don’t stay in the house all day. Get up and get out. Take a walk it feels good and your kids will enjoy the nice fresh air. The library is great (I don’t know if all libraries offer classes but our local library has classes like “toddler time”). It’s nice because the kids get to interact with other kids and it’s FREE!
  • Find a Balance. Besides being home with the kids comes other responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and making sure you have time for your spouse. Making time for family and friends functions. (I’m still trying to balance my life and make time for everyone.) What also is important? Making time for YOURSELF! We get busy with taking care of everyone and everything else and forget about ourselves. So take some time each day to do something you love or whatever makes you feel good. 🙂

  1. I’m a stay at home Mom too and have been blessed to be able to since having my first born back in 2011. It is indeed an adjustment and at times really stressful but so worth it. I couldn’t imagine life differently now. I don’t downplay sahm life but I will say I tip my hats to the working moms! They work and come home and still carry the weight of responsibility of being a momma and spouse.

  2. I was a stay at home mom for a little bit and now working back again because I am trying to save money so my husband, myself and our daughter can go home to the Philippines and visit my family. Your kids are so cute, I love the picture.

  3. Great advice…While the debate between SAHM and working mom continues, I think it is important to choose what you want to do and rock it!

  4. Thank you for sharing this. I’m a SAHM to my 14 month old after being a single working parent for many years. It’s definitely a big transition. I’m so grateful that I can do this, but I definitely miss adult interaction, and between that, my autoimmune disease giving me a hard time, and the brutal and never ending winter, there are many days that the only time I step outside is to take my daughter to the bus stop and to pick her up from school at the end of the day. This is a great reminder to push myself to get out.

    1. Same here adult interaction is important as well. I really try to plan things with my girlfriends from time to time but it can be a struggle with everyone’s schedule. Yes definitely get out being cooped up in the house all day isn’t good.

  6. Being a Stay At Home mom isn’t always easy, but the rewards of it all is far more important than being a working mom. Well, to me at least. I get to spend all day playing with my little one, what could be better than that? lol

  7. I’m a SAHM of 2. The most important thing for us is that we keep to a schedule and we leave the house daily. I also make sure to make time for myself cause Momma is important too.

  8. Great post! I have been a SAHM but am currently working, so I can also say that both is hard. I love your point about finding a balance for everything. That’s definitely important to do!

  9. Great tips Shantell! I’ve been a SAHM for nearly 5 years now, and most of the tips you shared have been helpful to me as well. Especially planning your day, making time for your husband and yourself, and getting the kids out. The library is one of our favorite places to go because they offer so many amazing programs for free of course! 🙂

  10. I love each of your points. I’ve been a SAHM since 2008. I’d say in my opinion there’s def more lows than highs bc I never seem to think I’ve done enough, enough for the little ones, enough for my blog, enough for me. However, as long as I see that, I’m reminded not to be too hard on myself, think about trying to do better tomorrow and keep going. Loved your post! ❤️

  11. I am a stay at home mom for a year now and I can honestly say it still has its ups and downs! Going from being independent and working to being home everyday with your child can be difficult but it is manageable!
I loved this post, thank you so much for sharing! This has inspired me to create my own blog about my experiences!!

  12. Thank you for this post.. My husband was laid off a few years ago due to an incurable medical condition and I had to get a job while he was at home with my 2 kids. Let me tell ya that was stressful! so when he finally got approved for disability he said I could stay home with them and I agreed to it. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Thank you for your inspiring post, girl! 🙂

  13. I feel like I could have written this myself! I’m still struggling to balance everything, it’s so hard to get anything done with a one year old that needs constant supervision. My husband often works from home and I think we both thought I would be able to make great breakfast, lunches and dinners while keeping a spotless house lol. We quickly both learned that our expectations were far from reality but things are getting easier as he gets older and I am so thankful to be home for all of his firsts!
